Coaching Philosophy
My coaching philosophy is synonomous with the reason I chose to become a coach, which is first and foremost to help others realize their goals and achieve new skills on an off the ice. I believe that as a coach, it is my duty to create a safe learning environment that empowers athletes of all levels to strive for excellence physically, psychologically and emotionally. I believe that as coaches we hold a great power of influence over the development of our athletes. As a leader, I recognize that people of all ages who engage in sports are able to build confidence and character that can result in a positive sense of accomplishment. I don’t believe in taking that power lightly. I believe that it is my responsibility to teach my athletes to be aware of the standards and behaviours of good sportsmanship and respect for others. I am responsible for keeping the joy that accompanies playing a sport at the forefront while creating an optimal learning environment through firm but positive leadership. I believe that athletes need to be given the opportunity to develop his/her skill level in a structured learning environment that constantly challenges the athlete whilst providing both encouragement and support through healthy communication. As a coach I am constinuously striving to teach my athletes these fundamental life skills while hoping to inspire them to stay active for life.
My name is Liz, I have a Master’s degree in Education with a focus on social emotional learning in sports and recreation. I have two undergraduate degrees, one of which is bilingual in French and English, as well as over 15 years experience coaching in the sport of skating. I’m a certified professional coach with the NCCP and Skate Canada.
I absolutely love teaching and more so learning, especially from my students. I strongly believe that we are naturally social creatures who enhance our understanding of the world around us through the reflections of others.
Through my own years of competing in sport at the provincial and national levels, I have gained many learned experiences through both success and failures. I believe this is a critical and integral part of the recreation and sport environment that enhances learning in children and youths, and even adult learners as well.
I have coached several sports throughout the years including team events, individuals, and people with special needs. I have almost two decades of experience creating individualized and specialized skill development sessions for ages 1 year through 84 years, I am well versed in the area of non-formal education. It is my passion and I’d love nothing more than to share that with you!
